The 13th International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2017 took place between 18th and 23rd July 2017 in Zhukovsky, a town in the suburbs of Moscow, widely known of its aviation designing and testing facilities, including M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute (Лётно-исследовательский институт имени М. М. Громова) and the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (Центральный аэрогидродинамический институт – ЦАГИ).

Many people recognize MAKS as the airshow event, but the airshow is just a final part of the six days of the Salon, which starts with the business days of the aviation and space trade fair, intended for the wide public of aviation and space professionals.
Official opening the 2017 edition of MAKS by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin underlines the significant meaning of the Aviation and Space Salon to the Russian aviation and space industry. According to the official press release published shortly after the event, the volume of contracts and letters of intent reached the amount of RUB 394 billion, and the business potential of MAKS-2017 exceeded RUB 600 billion.

There were more than 880 companies present at the Salon, including 180 foreign manufacturers from 36 countries. National pavilions of Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, China, Czech Republic, Canada, Belarus, India, and Iran were formed, the exposition area exceeded 26 thousand sqm. The professional part of the MAKS-2017 was attended by more than 70,000 visitors.

Three days of the weekend were the open public days, with the flying programme performed by various civil and military aircraft, including the aerobatics groups (Fursan Al Emarat, Baltic Bees, Jet Team, Russian Knights, the Swifts, the Falcons of Russia, Rus’, the First Flight and Chelavia Team). The spectators could see 90 aircrafts during the flying displays and then additional 116 aircrafts at the static displays – from the brand-new constructions like MiG-35 and Mi-171Sh-VN having their public premiere at the Salon, through current military equipment of the Russian Air Force to the historical aircrafts including the huge Tu-144 and Myasishchev VM-T Atlant.

Additional flying programme, focused on business presentation of the airplanes and helicopters, was performed in the afternoon of each business days, with the displays of Mi-35M, MiG-35, L-410 NG Airbus A350 and other aircrafts.
Another significant displays during the Salon included Mi-28NE attack helicopter, Yak-152 trainer (performing their first flying displays at MAKS), restored to airworthy condition Il-2M3 ´Sturmovik´ WW2 ground-attack aircraft or KB SAT SR-10 training aircraft with the forward-swept wings construction.

Certainly, the spectators were waiting mainly for the aerobatics groups, as mentioned hereinbefore. And they were not disappointed, all groups performed their best and the visitors could watch the breath-taking group displays. The aerobatics groups were complemented by the solo display of Svetlana Kapanina, flying the Extra-300 aerobatics special.

During the six days of the event, MAKS-2017 Aviation and Space Salon was visited by 452,300 people. And even with such huge number of visitors and the high level of the security control at the gates, the organizers managed to keep the logistics at the amazingly smooth level. Thanks to that, the visitors could have the marvellous aviation experience at the Salon, without being afraid it would be spoiled by the organizational issues.
